NAWBO Women’s Business Conference is Valuable, Practical, Inspiring

Valuable. Practical. Inspiring. This is how I’d describe the NAWBO National Women's Business Conference that Carrie Magruder (owner of The BrickHouse Massage and Coffee Bar and our President-Elect) and I attended in Chicago in June.  On NAWBO day, the day specifically designed for chapter leadership, chapter leaders from all across the country came together to learn from each other. Updates from National and chapter best practices were shared. Your NAWBONW Board will be having a strategic planning retreat in September. Our agenda will include a review of these best practices and discuss which we may set as goals for this fiscal year.

Additional conference highlights, for me, included two keynote speakers, Suzy Welch and Peter Walsh.  Suzy Welch shared thoughts from her new book, 10-10-10, which is a decision making tool. In making a decision, think about what the impact of your choice will be 10 minutes, 10 months, and 10 years from now. This approach keeps you aligned with your values and happier in both the short and long-terms.

Peter Walch, professional organizer, challenged us to get rid of clutter (all kinds) by being clear on our life vision. Without that clarity, it is difficult to create the reality we want.

In between the keynotes, I found the breakouts sessions to be very practical and actionable. They focused on how to help women business owners be better, more effective in that role and ranged from social networking, to negotiating, to PR.

Thank you for the opportunity to represent our chapter. And I am even more excited about our chapter theme this year, Power Your Dream! – Alison Zecha

NAWBO National Women’s Business Conference 2009 ~ ‘Power Your Dream’ – Carrie Magruder

I had the pleasure of attending the NAWBO National Convention in Chicago in late June.  Along with our Inland NW Chapter President and fearless leader, Alison Zecha, I dove in head first and grabbed every opportunity that came my way.

The conference was packed with interactive workshops, inspirational speakers, endless resources and invaluable business connections.  The energy was amazing. I’ve been to a lot of conferences and I can tell you that the energy at this one was all abuzz.  In addition to acquiring many new ideas for enhancing our local NAWBO chapter, I know that my business is sure to reap the rewards of my increased knowledge, courage and passion.

Less than a month after returning home, I am already living a more fulfilling and value-driven life!  I hope you’ll join me at the 2010 Conference in Washington D.C. – Carrie Magruder

Cindra Shields Receives Power Woman Award

The Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce started a new tradition at the 2009 Power Women’s Summit by presenting an award recognizing an outstanding woman in business.  This first Power Woman Award was presented to Cindra Shields, owner of Graphic Business Systems.

A “power woman” is creative, has the ability to find that extra energy to get jobs done and meet demanding deadlines, has mastered the art of multi-tasking.  She is busy but finds time to lend a helping hand to customers, associates and friends.  She is an inspiration to her peers and is respected by her industry.  She is not only a success in business but manages to give back to her community while balancing the needs of work and family.   The selection of this first recipient was made by the planning committee for the Power Women’s Summit led by Shelley Runolfson, co-owner of Fashion Carpets in Spokane Valley.

Cindra started a successful career in the publishing industry in California in 1988.   She became active in the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce where she won the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2000.  She then joined the Chamber staff in Redondo Beach as the Creative Director and won the Outstanding Achievement Award for Newsletter, given by the Western Association of Chamber Executives.  This coveted award was won just 7 months after she created the publications division for that organization.  In 2003 she decided to move to the Spokane area and chose to locate her business in Spokane Valley.  She has become an active member of the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce and of NAWBO.  In 2006 she became the publisher of Remodel Spokane.  In 2007 the Spokane Home Builders Association honored her with the President’s Award for Outstanding Service to the building industry.  Congratulations, Cindra.

Humanix Golfs for Food

Nancy Nelson reports: Humanix Staffing and Recruiting collected over $1700 for Spokane Valley Partners” Inaugural “Will Golf for Food” food and fund drive.

The Humanix golf team may not have made a difference at Spokane Valley Partners 10th Annual Golf Tournament on July 16th, but Humanix’s effort helped make an important contribution to Spokane Valley Partners’ food bank. During the summer, food bank donations are usually down, yet need is high, as children start their summer break.  The sixteen employees at Humanix collected the most food and funds, $1791 over a six week period in their “Will Golf for Food” campaign.

When Humanix was approached to co-sponsor the “Will Golf for Food” food and fund drive to support Spokane Valley Partners’ food bank, the staff knew they had the opportunity to think big and get as many community members involved as possible. Humanix contacted some of their clients and received great support from Sonderen Packaging, F5 Networks, Modern Machinery Company, Numerica Credit Union, Inland Empire Distribution Systems, ACRAnet, and Lydig Construction Inc with food and funds collected.  Humanix staff volunteered for hours outside of Albertons at Trent and Argonne asking for food donations.  Staff also contributed food and funds by paying to wear jeans to work.  Humanix -- with just 16 employees -- was also the overall winner of the Will Golf for Food, drive raising $1,791.00 worth of food and funds.”

3 Myth’s of Home Based Businesses

Myth 1: Your homeowner's insurance policy will cover most losses to your home business.

Don’t count on your current homeowner’s policy to protect your business. Most homeowner’s policies don't cover extra buildings (such as carriage houses or converted garages) frequently used for business, nor do they cover the loss of business data or injuries to clients or colleagues that occur on your premises. In addition, even if your policy does include business property in your home, it may only cover up to a few thousand dollars -- hardly enough to replace a valuable computer system should disaster strike.

Many insurance companies offer a specially designed rider for your homeowner’s policy that will extend it to include property, equipment and general liability coverage for your home-based business. Expect the premiums to be up to $200 or more a year.

Myth 2: Your existing auto insurance covers business use of your car.

If you occasionally use your personal car for business purposes, or you sometimes have clients in your car, you will probably need to extend your personal car insurance to cover business use. It’s a good idea to check your current policy to see what kind of business use is covered. If you keep valuable products in your trunk, remember that most auto insurance does not cover the contents of your car, so you will need to make sure that your product policy covers loss outside your home.

If employees or others use your family car for business purposes, put their names on your policy. If your employees use their car while working for you, you may need to get separate non-owned car insurance. Any vehicle that is used primarily for business will likely require a separate business-auto policy.

Myth 3: You’re properly covered, so you don’t have to give any more thought to insurance coverage for your business.

As your home-based business expands, so will your insurance needs. What was adequate coverage in your start-up phase could prove insufficient as the value of your business (and your equipment) increases. It’s quite possible that you will outgrow the coverage your homeowner’s policy rider or home business insurance provides.

Make it a habit to check with your broker about your insurance needs as your business grows. In fact, you should review your policy with your broker at least once a year. Does your policy currently meet your needs? Is all your equipment covered? Is there anything you can do to reduce your premiums?
