NAWBO-NW’s Outstanding Woman Business Entrepreneur $1000 Scholarship Recipient to be Announced in June
March 2010 - The National Association of Women Business Owners of the Inland Northwest (NAWBO-NW) will announce the winner of the Outstanding Woman Business Entrepreneur Scholarship in June.
NAWBO-NW will award a $1000.00 scholarship to an Outstanding Woman Business Entrepreneur enrolled in the Integrated Business & Entrepreneurship (IBE) Program at Spokane Community College. In the Spring semester, after 3/4 of their studies, students were asked to apply for the scholarship explaining their business, or their business plan. NAWBO-NW will select and announce the winner in June, who, upon graduation, will receive scholarship monies to launch or further her business.
Spokane Community College students were incredibly excited about the opportunity and very grateful for the chance to apply. NAWBO-NW confirmed the applications of female students in the program have been received, and the recipient will be announced in at the Spokane Community College graduation ceremony in June 2010.
Yvonne Welles, Owner of Able Spaces, Attends NAWBO Leadership Seminar
October 2009 - NAWBO-NW awarded Yvonne Welles, owner of Ables Spaces, a certified Woman Owned business, and a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business, an opportunity to attend the 2009 NAWBO Leadership Seminar & Annual Banquet in October 2009. Welles was able to participate in the seminar, Living Your Dream - Taking Control of Your Success! with Dr. Laura Asbell, meet Kay LeClaire who summitted Mt. Everest in 2009, and to hear Keynote speaker Beveryly Kuykendall present Powerful Dream - Event + Response = Outcome. Without the award opportunity, Wells would not have been able to attend.
Able Spaces just reached it's one year mark, and Welles told us she is keeping her head above water. "The seminar and banquet seemed to tie together well in illustrating what women can accomplish in spite of the numerous hurdles put in their way", says Welles. " The speakers were very inspirational. I came away with additional drive to continue jumping those hurdles."
Able Spaces is a full-fledged commercial furniture dealer with services and products. Welles started her business with $500 and a dream of improving the way commercial furniture sales were handled. She wanted a results driven - not sales driven - atmosphere that focused on informing clients about things other than just a chair or desk; including air quality, furniture quality, and a more rounded solution. Welles chose to carry products that use renewable materials, have Green-Guard certification, and are American-made. Knowing that normally sales in this industry are only good in a growth phase, Wells is happy to see her company continue - and grow. Welles hopes to expand and hire customer service reps in the coming year.
