unCorked! Program Unveiled

We have a fabulous program scheduled for unCorked! this year, thanks to the imagination of John Allen, from Vino! and Josh Wade of the Nectar Tasting Room.  John will tell you fascinating details about the wines, and Josh will tell you all about each winery. Here is what you can expect:

  • 5:30 - 6:00  Sparkling wine reception. Peruse the raffle items and splurge on tickets.
  • 6:00  Turn in your champagne flute for a wine glass while learning about the next tastings: a white wine blend and a Pinot Noir. Share a toast to our unCorked! sponsors and be enticed by our raffle line up.
  • 6:20 - 6:30  Here come the reds!  Enjoy three more tastings: a Malbec, red blend, and a Cabernet. Have your raffle tickets at hand for the next drawings.
  • 6:50- 7:00  Enjoy an elegant port while sampling decadent chocolates placed around the room. More raffle items sweeten the experience.
  • 7:20  Final raffle winners announced.
  • 7:40 - 8:30  Linger over conversation and a glass of your favorite wine from the evening. Or, take a bottle home. All wines on the Nectar Tasting Room menu will be available to you for purchase.

Food will be catered by Puttin' on the Ritz, and we have several Chocolatiers providing chocolate. We have wonderful donations already for the raffle, but we can always use more.

Thank you to our wonderful Chardonnay level unCorked! sponsors: Coeur d'Alene Olive Oil Company, Frucci and Associates, Inland Northwest Robotics Alliance, Riverbank,  Synergy Healthcare, Tiller Care Strategies and Volwiler Counseling.

Movher Aids Transitions

On January 15, NAWBO member Sabrina Jones, owner of Movher, and her crew donated their moving services to Transitions, a Spokane-based non-profit agency that serves women and children. Transitions is a non-profit that Movher has chosen to support and Sabrina felt that this was an excellent opportunity for her and her staff to serve. Transitions' staff members provided homemade cinnamon rolls in the morning and David's Pizza for lunch; we were asleep by dinnertime (!). Nine of Sabrina's crew members volunteered their labor for the move, while Brumback Rentals on the north side of Spokane donated the 2 moving trucks. Transitions' new administrative offices are located at 3102 W. Fort George Wright Drive, near SFCC.

To learn more about Transitions, visit www.help4women.org . To see photos from the day as well as other photos of Movher on location, go to www.facebook.com/movher

Group Coordinators Offers Memorable Experiences

Julie Saucier, owner of Group Coordinators reports that with the economy as it is, the corporate climate is changing.  Instead of companies taking their meetings, incentive programs and retreats at far away destinations, they are looking closer to home.  Julie says they have developed more programs geared toward the corporate market.  “There is so much right in our own backyard, you can stay in the area and still offer a memorable experience."

Some options include; pairing wines with gourmet cheeses and chocolates at different wineries, hands-on cooking classes, “behind the scenes” tours, owner operated gallery and boutique tours with something special at each stop, photo tours, pick or catch your dinner, then have the chef prepare it, kayaking, river rafting, Frisbee golf and hiking are just a few of the options locally.  For evening venues; historic homes, wineries, the Fox and Met, and a buy-out of a restaurant for an evening are all great choices for a memorable event and don’t forget about all the great resorts in the area! Become a tourist in your own town and “Buy Local”!

Julie has been in business for over 25 years and can be reached at (509) 455-4354 or email julie@groupcoordinators.com

Diane Maehl Asks: “Who Let The Dogs Out?”

"Who Let the Dogs Out?”, a special one-day pet portrait event at Diane Maehl Photography, will be held on February 26, 2011. The session fee is one bag of cat or dog food which will be donated to the pets of families served by Meals on Wheels Spokane. Reservations are required, only 16 slots available! Call Diane Maehl to reserve your time. (509) 459-0766.

Ownership Change at Simply Northwest

On January 1, Simply Northwest, a well-known professional gift service, began an exciting new year as Denielle Waltermire, Marti Hollenback's daughter, took over as the new owner. Simply Northwest was founded in 1989 by De Scott and has always been a favorite local specialty gift shop and gift basket company. Simply Northwest showcases locally handcrafted items and regional foods and wines. Denielle, a graduate of Spokane Falls Community College with degrees in Business Management and Marketing, and Eastern Washington University with a degree in Social Work, was formerly Retail Manager of Simply Northwest and has been with the company since October of 2006.

SBA Business Solutions (Coralie Myers) Provides Resources Alerts

New Resource –SCORE Small Business Resource Guide

The new 52 page SCORE Small Business Resource Guide for Eastern Washington and North Idaho is now available online at:

http://www.scorespokane.org/resources.php

. Print copies should be available in 2 weeks. The new guide is 4 pages longer and includes not only contact information for local, state, and federal agencies and organizations, but also helpful informational articles on Self-Employment Tax, the Seven Deadly Sins of Business, and more. The web links and e-mail addresses are live, so you don’t have to retype them. This is the most comprehensive and up-to-date listing of resources in the area.

Contracting Help

Starting February 11, SBA is rolling out a new program that will make it easier for women-owned businesses to get into federal contracting -- the SBA Women-Owned Small Business Program (WOSB).

This will help women-owned businesses in 83 under-represented industries secure government contracting through government set-asides. For more information, go to: www.sba.gov/wosb or e-mail: wosb@sba.gov

WomenBiz.gov

Another resource for contracting assistance is www.WomenBiz.gov . It is a consolidated website of official information for women-owned businesses selling to the government. Contractors and vendors can find and register in the Central Contractor Registration (CCR) database and the Electronic Posting System (EPS).

WomenBiz.gov also offers forecasts (planned purchases by agencies), best practices, acquisition news, calendar of events, and info on mentor-protégé programs

SBA.gov

The SBA has changed its website dramatically. The main address is the same – www.SBA.gov -- but all links under it changed.  The new SBA website is very intuitive and user-focused, especially if you are new to the site. I would recommend you try it out!

Lunell Haught Presents “Speak Up”

Lunell Haught will present "Speak Up" based on her research with Ginny Darrell at 11:30 on February 8 at the Society of Human Resource Manager's luncheon.  Find out why it's so difficult for employees to tell managers and owners what they need to know - and why it's so hard for managers and owners to hear it - and what to do about it.
