November NAWBO Features Hospice

Date & Time Thursday, November 11, 2010 Networking @ 5:00pm, Dinner @ 6:00pm

Program: Hospice in Spokane
Featured Speaker: Gina Drummond

For business owners in particular, caring for an elderly relative can take a toll. While there are no hard statistics, elder-care experts say that within families, it's often the sibling who's an entrepreneur that becomes chief caretaker. That's partly because business owners have a natural "take-charge" personality and partly because others in the family (especially those who work full time) perceive them to have more flexible schedules. Gina Drummond, CEO for Hospice of Spokane, talks about dealing with balancing the running of our businesses with the demands of our aging parents.

Location: The Lincoln Center, 1316 North Lincoln Street, Spokane, WA 99201

Reservations & Payment Options: Early reservation, due by Noon, Tuesday, November 11: $34.00 Reservations after noon on Tuesday, or walk-ins: $39.00

News from Bonnie Bell-Andersen Financial Services

Bell-Andersen Financial Services, LLC has had quite a roller coaster of a year, but fortunately, things are quieting down, looking up, getting better - yeah! In the same "things are great" category, I have TWO daughters that are both pregnant, and both going to give birth next April --you MAY not see me at the April, 2011 meeting! This makes grandbabies # 5& 6 - whew! I am also excited to announce that I have a new service partnership that I am unveiling in November of this year. I will be helping clients facilitate using this wonderful way to have immediate access to their important documents. It is called DocuBank - so what is it?

DocuBank stores all advance directives:

  • Living Will
  • Health Care Power of Attorney
  • HIPAA Release
  • Organ Donor Form
  • Funeral Arrangements
  • All Other Advance Directives
DocuBank is the largest and oldest electronic storage and access service for your health care directives in the nation. DocuBank helps to ensure that your medical wishes are known and respected when it counts. Around the clock, around the world. Immediate Access When you store your health care documents with DocuBank, you receive a customized DocuBank Emergency Card that makes all of your critical healthcare documents available in two convenient ways:
A Call: By placing a toll free call hospitals can have your health care directives immediately faxed to them in case you are in an accident
A Click: Simply by clicking the Hospital Button, or using the pop up box on the Web site, hospital staff can view and print documents immediately
Medical Alerts
The DocuBank card lists important medical conditions and allergy information so that it is immediately available at the hospital. The name and contact information of one emergency contact also appears on the face of the card. A cover page that accompanies the directives any time they are requested also lists two additional contacts and the name and number of a primary care physician.
Security and Peace of Mind
Private Password Protection means members have an added level of protection for on-line DocuBank information. While hospitals can print your directives using your member number and PIN, they cannot make changes to your personal contact information.
b>Family Notification Service
DocuBank now offers a Family Notification Service. Members can send a personalized email to friends and family members letting them know that they have joined the DocuBank service and that their health care wishes are available 24/7/365 in an emergency.
Communicating Health care Wishes
DocuBank can help members communicate their wishes verbally too. We know that conversations about death and dying are difficult. That's why we offer some suggestions and guidelines on how to broach this subject with loved ones. Available in our Member Services section, we provide important conversation topics along with helpful links.
Wallet Stickers
The DocuBank Emergency card arrives within 4-6 weeks of enrollment and comes with alert stickers to be placed on the members' driver's license. These alert stickers tell hospital and emergency staff that they can obtain your health care directives using your DocuBank wallet card.
Additional Cards
Members can print additional cards for friends and family members at any time. Additional paper copies of the card also arrive along with the plastic emergency card.

The annual fee to take advantage of this is incredibly affordable. Normal retail cost for this is $45 for one year or $145 for five years. For my NAWBO sisters, I will be able to provide this service for you for $35 per year or $125/5 years. Clients carry their DocuBank Emergency Cards in their wallets. The card instructs the hospital to call the service, whereupon we transmit clients' living wills to the hospital right away any time, day or night, around the world. When your advance directives are faxed to the hospital, we also include the names and telephone numbers of your three emergency contacts and primary care physician.

Call me if this sounds interesting - it's a great use of technology, and I'd be happy to answer your question! -- Bonnie Bell-Andersen, CLU

BrickHouse Holds Benefit for Candlelighters

The BrickHouse Massage & Coffee Bar recently raised over $2400 to benefit Candlelighters of the Inland NW. On Sunday, Sept 26, The BrickHouse opened its doors for a full 8 hours of deluxe spa pampering and gourmet coffee drinks. All of the 16 employees who worked that day volunteered their time and expertise for a cause that has become near and dear to their hearts. Candlelighters is a local non-profit organization that assists families who have children diagnosed with Cancer. For the past several years, the BrickHouse has sent a team to the Sacred Heart Oncology unit to offer spa services to the parents, staff, and patients. Carrie Magruder, Owner, said the BrickHouse had an overwhelming response from clients and will make this an annual event each September during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. -- Carrie Magruder ~

Spokane Valley Partners Annual Fund Raiser

Donna Graham of Donna´s Seams to Fit would like to tell you about Ladies Nite Out, the Spokane Valley Partners annual fund raiser, and how you can participate. Ladies Nite Out (LNO) is a fun event for women with a light buffet meal, beverages, and a silent and live auction. Attendees are all women -- mostly working professionals from ages 20 to 70. 2010 will be the third year for this fund raiser. The past two years collectively grossed over $32,000. All profits from LNO stay in the service area of Spokane Valley Partners. Our 2010 event will be on Thursday, November 4, at the Mirabeau Park Hotel on Sullivan. The festivities start at 5:30 p.m. and wrap up about 8:00.

Some NAWBO members are sponsors, and Donna is on the organizing committee. SBA Business Solutions and Independent Services Corp are financial sponsors, and some have donated items. Carrie Magruder has donated a couple of very attractive gift certificates. Numerica Credit Union is the title sponsor for this annual fall fund raiser. This fun event begins with a light buffet meal and beverages followed by a silent and live auction. Among the items for auction are jewelry, clothing, gift baskets, quilts, and gift certificates for goods and services. The big ticket item of the evening will be a 2 person, 7-day Holland America cruise, valued at $1600. The highest bidder will have her choice of cruising to Mexico or the Caribbean.

Spokane Valley Partners is home to the food bank, clothing bank, and other assistance and education programs designed to give a hand up (versus a hand out) to our less fortunate neighbors. In 2009, the Spokane Valley Partners served 11,498 families with over 1.1 million pounds of food; over 8,000 families received clothing, and 651 families received emergency assistance in the amount of $59,000. This is just a snapshot of services provided. Many other wonderful programs are run within the walls of the facility -- most happening at the hands of the dedicated volunteers who last year donated over 27,000 hours. Fund raising expenses (to include salaries) are less than 7%, so you know that at least 93 cents of every dollar donated is going directly into programs. - Donna Graham
