Message from Immediate Past President Alison Zecha
Dear NAWBO sisters,
I am grateful to have partnered with all the smart, talented, dedicated and generous members of the 2009-2010 Inland Northwest Chapter NAWBO Board of Directors, committee chairs and each of you, our wonderful members this past year.
The Board has forwarded our NAWBO-NW Mission and Vision through many "just-do-it" improvements throughout the year along the new three-year plan -- which you will be able to read in the "members area" of our local Web site in mid-August. We hope that these plans offer more membership value to our current and future members.
I'm looking forward to an exciting 2010-11 year with each of you. It has been an honor to serve you.
Aloha, Alison
Immediate Past President FY2010-11

WORKSHOP
Speaker: Jeanetty Nyden
Title: "Leverage Your Natural Negotiation Talents: 10 Techniques Specifically for Women"
Description: Gender matters whether negotiating at the office or at home. Women are perceived as weak for wanting to preserve relationships, while men are perceived as strong for winning at all costs. The word negotiation even implies competition, especially in the business world.
Consider this though: Businesses are quickly learning that collaboration, in the form of partnerships and alliances, wins more business today than old fashioned competition. Learn how to leverage your natural talent to collaborate at the bargaining table.
In this interactive presentation, you will learn 10 techniques that leverage your negotiation skills. Learn to:
- Uncover hidden motivations
- Offer tradeoffs (not concessions!)
- Make winning counteroffers
- Avoid common roadblocks
- And many more valuable tips and techniques
You do not have to adopt a competitive attitude to get great results at the bargaining table. Leverage your natural ability to work together and see your business grow.
Bio: Jeanette Nyden works with business people to improve both their confidence and skill level at the bargaining table. She understands what it takes to navigate complex contracts and complicated relationships. In fact, she wrote a book on it. Negotiation Rules! A Practical Approach to Big Deal Negotiations.
Recognizing in 2003 that business people needed relevant and practical negotiation advice, Ms. Nyden started J. Nyden & Co, Inc. Since then, Ms. Nyden has trained and coached hundreds of people at businesses ranging from powerhouses like Microsoft to start-ups like NetStar Communications. Ms. Nyden is an active, professional mediator, business attorney and adjunct professor in Seattle, Washington.
Before starting her own company, Ms. Nyden handled litigation for a boutique Bankruptcy firm. This experience developed her ability to identify and implement strategies (not just tactics) when dealing with hidden motives that can often hinder the negotiation process. Earlier in her career, she served as an Assistant Public Defender in Chicago, Illinois, the largest criminal justice system in the United States.
Ms. Nyden earned her B.A. and Juris Doctorate from the Southern Illinois University. Ms. Nyden donated hundreds of hours mediating disputes for the Pierce County Center for Dispute Resolution, a non-profit organization. She has taught negotiation classes at various universities in Puget Sound over the last 4 years. Ms. Nyden and her husband have lived in Seattle since 2002.
