Diversity Statement
In principle and in practice the National Association of
Women Business Owners (NAWBO) values and seeks a diverse and
inclusive membership. NAWBO shall seek full participation
in the organization by all women business owners regardless
of race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin,
or disability. NAWBO's goal is to fully represent the diverse
make-up of the women business owner community through increased
representation within ethnic and minority communities and
to expand access to leadership opportunities.

History
NAWBO traces its origins to a small group of Washington,
DC business women who began meeting informally in the Spring
of 1974 to talk about mutual experiences, exchange information
and develop business skills. Recognizing the value of the
group, they incorporated as the National Association of Women
Business Owners on July 5, 1974. Two years later they began
recruiting members from across the country, and in 1978 the
first chapters were formed.
Our chapter was founded in 1995. The story goes that Coralee
Myers, in her capacity as director of the Spokane Business
Incubation Center, heard about NAWBO while attending a conference.
She immediately called Diana Wilhite, principal in Safeguard
Business Systems, and local political activist. The conception
of our chapter couldn't have been in better hands. Between
Coralee and Diana, few local woman business owners escaped
their gentle persuasion. In the end, 15 women agreed to find
time in their already hectic lives to do what was necessary
to found a local chapter. Thanks to their dedication and forethought,
our chapter is a vital source of support for more than 50
woman business owners from the Spokane and North Idaho area.
If you are a local, woman business owner and you are interested
in joining our chapter, you are welcome to join us at one
of our monthly meetings. Click here for dates and information.
